Step 1: Do Your Homework
Begin your research by reading reviews from recent brides and browsing hundreds of listings. Meticulously review potential wedding photographers‘ websites and blogs to look at pictures of other weddings they've shot, which is going to give you an idea of their style. The design of the site could also give you clues concerning the photographer's personality and sensibility. Look at their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages as well, if possible. Is the feedback from customers positive? How does the wedding photographer respond?
Step 2: Set Up Interviews
This is not a decision that can be made on appearance only—you have to meet your potential wedding photographers in person. If you like what you see on their websites—and their prices are in your budget range—call to see if they're available for your wedding date. If the wedding photographer has already been booked on your date, you might wish to see if they have an associate or can suggest another shooter with a similar style.
Schedule in-person interviews with three to five potential wedding photographers who are accessible on your wedding date to check out more of their work and analyze whether your personalities mesh. Be ready to speak regarding your venue, your wedding style and what you envision for your pictures.
Step 3: See a Few Full Wedding Albums
Do not base your choice only on what you see in a photographer's highlights gallery or album. For good purposes, wedding photographers show prospective customers a portfolio of their best photos, all from various weddings, so you're looking at the best of the best. The issue with that is you are not going to get a well-rounded idea of their work. Ask to view two or three full galleries from real weddings they've shot, so you may get a better idea of what your full collection of photos may look like after the wedding.
If you see that the complete gallery pictures are only about as good as the ones selected in the highlight gallery, you're on the right path. And ask to view at least one or two full albums of weddings that are in similar settings to yours. For instance, if you're planning an indoor affair with dark lighting, do not only look at weddings shot outdoors in natural sunlight. And if you decide to say “I do” on a beach at sunset, you are going to want to see examples of that.
